The Ones Left Behind
Symi, Greece · First Light
Some departures are remembered not for the distance they create, but for the silence they leave behind.
It was just after first light in Symi.
The ferry had already begun to pull away from the harbor. From the quay, one man remained still, watching until the vessel slowly dissolved into the pale horizon.
There was nothing extraordinary about that morning. No dramatic gestures. No final words. Only a quiet farewell that, with time, became something far greater than anyone standing there could have imagined.
These photographs preserve those few silent minutes.
The Departure
The engines break the morning silence, and the ferry slowly pulls away from the harbor. From the shore, he watches without a word. Every departure carries more than passengers; it carries the quiet weight of moments that cannot remain.
The Cretan
The sea is quiet once again. Not a trace of what happened lingers on the landscape. Only the memory of a farewell remains, carried not by the waves, but kept by the one left behind.
Until It Disappears
He does not leave when the ferry casts off its lines. Nor when it becomes just a distant speck in the dawn light. Sometimes, farewell does not end with departure, but at the moment when nothing is left on the horizon.
Years later, I realized these photographs were never about a departing ferry. They were about those who remained on the shore.
In The Silence Of The Pier
The ferry is gone. The sea has settled back into silence, as if nothing ever happened. Yet the harbor feels different, not because it has changed, but because someone left their trace upon leaving.
The Ones Left Behind
After every departure, someone always remains on the shore. Not to hold on to the past, but to silently keep its memory alive.
Returning to the Island
At last, he turns away from the horizon. The sea has nothing more to offer him. The sun is rising, and the island quietly calls him to move on.
Today, neither of them is left there-neither the man on the pier nor the woman waving goodbye. What remains are these photographs, guardians of a quiet morning against the oblivion of time.
