The Ones Left Behind

We usually define nostalgia as the longing of those who left. But there is another side to it—the nostalgia of those who stay behind. On the piers of small Aegean islands, when autumn approaches, the locals stand still, waving goodbye to children flying away or friends returning to the rhythms of their own daily lives.

This is my grandfather, known to everyone on the island of Symi as 'The Cretan.' He chose this rock to build his life, his family, and ultimately, my own existence. Standing at the edge of the dock, watching the ferry disappear into the horizon, his silhouette captures the quiet ache of island separation. For those who remain on the shore, surviving the winter until the next arrival, the horizon is not just a view—it is a promise and a memory.
